What Can I Do To Make Money Online In Nigeria? (Blogging Questions & Answers)

(Last Updated On: October 29, 2016)

I get lots of emails, messages … from individuals, especially beginners who want to know the intricacies of blogging and how they can make money blogging in Nigeria.

While I try to answer each and every question I get to best of my ability, I thought it would be a good idea to publish the most recent series of questions I received from readers of this blog.

This would serve as a helpful guide to those who are having similar challenges and give them a road map to follow and hopefully guide them to success.

I’ll keep this post updated always as I receive more and more questions, so make sure check back frequently. Also, if you have a question: feel free to drop them in the comments.

I’ll give you an instant answer!

So, let’s roll:

Question 1: I’m done with my NYSC and looking for a job. Do you think blogging can earn me sufficient income, or should I focus on getting a job while blogging on a part time basis?

Answer: First, I need to tell you this: blogging is not a get-rich-scheme as most people paint it.

It takes time (usually at least 6 months) before you start earning income from your blog when you do things the right way.

So, I advice you to get a day job first that would sustain and pay the bills while blogging on a part-time basis.

With time, you would be able to earn enough income to quit your job and focus fully on your blog. You just have to take the transition gradually so you can sustain yourself.

I’ve read many articles and sales materials from numerous “gurus” in Nigeria that claim they can teach you how to earn 6-figures from a blog within 7 days or less.

That’s a blatant lie!

It’s just not possible when you take a realistic view at it.

Here’s what I advice you do:

Create a business plan for your blog before launching it. This would really guide you and give you a roadmap to follow that’ll lead you to success.

My free ebook: How To Create A Powerful Business Plan For Your Blog covers the entire process of creating a powerful business plan for your blog, so get your free copy right away.

Just so you know: I started earning income from this blog right from the first month because I planned the whole structure of the blog for months before I launched this blog.

So, I advice you do same.

Question 2: If I intend being a full-time blogger, are there other ways of making money online that you can advice me to try while waiting for my blog to mature and start bringing in substantial income?

Answer: There are numerous ways you can make money online: freelancing, affiliate marketing, information, consulting, private advertising … the list is endless!

I recommend you take your time and read the following post:

How To Make Money Online In Nigeria The Right Way (Scams Exposed!)

How To Make Money Blogging In Nigeria (Beginners’ Guide)

I’ve covered the whole concept behind making money online in Nigeria in those posts. Take your time to read them and take action.

Question 3: Is it advisable to start my blog as free hosted blog and move to hosting it later when I’m ready to monetize it? Are there negative implications of doing this?

I don’t recommend anyone starting a free blog especially if you want to make money online. It’ll take you nowhere. A free blog sends the wrong signals to readers and comes with numerous restrictions that would hinder your success.

In fact, this is one of the reasons I wrote this post: 11 Reasons You Should Not Start A Blog On A Free Platform

If you’re really serious about blogging, get started on a serious note by starting a self-hosted blog – specifically on WordPress.

I have two awesome tutorials you can use:

How To Set Up A Self Hosted WordPress Blog On Namecheap

How To Set Up A Self Hosted WordPress Blog On Whogohost

…and your blog should be online in less than 30 Minutes.

Question 4: Should I go for a local hosting company since they are cheaper like Whogohost that you advertise on your blog?

Answer: Yes, you can go for a Nigerian web hosting company.

But, I must tell you this (so, you don’t lose the trust you have in me):

Some Nigerian web hosting companies (not all though) are big time suckers. They offer limited services, poor support and technical capabilities.

I currently recommend Whogohost  (at the moment) as they provide quality services and efficient customer support. So, you would have no issues with them.

In fact, with my step-by-step tutorial, you will have your self-hosted blog online in 30 minutes.

Question 5: Is it necessary to register your domain name before hosting a blog. Are there exceptional cases?

Answer: The domain name of your blog is the url which people will type in the web browser to access your site. While a hosting account enables your blog to be accessible online.

You have to register the domain name first before hosting comes into play.

Question 6: After domain name registration and WordPress installation, will I be sent a link via which to access my domain name/cpanel?

Usually, the web hosting companies I recommend on this blog sends your hosting details to the email you signed up with them.

Once you complete the domain registration and buy a web hosting plan, you’ll be sent your login (username and password) details for your hosting account.

Regarding your wordpress installation, when you complete the installation process on your domain – your Admin Username, Password, Admin Url will be displayed.

Your Admin Url is where you log in to make changes to your blog and add content. Only have access to this.

Your Admin Username and Password are the details you chose when installing wordpress, so keep it safe.

It is different from your hosting login details. So, mix both together!

Question 7: How long does it take before I start making money online?

This depends on the online business model you’re venturing into: it could be 1 week, 6 months or be up to a year before you start earning income online.

It depends on yourself, what you do, how hard you work, how smart you work and other factors.

For example, if you’re a good writer and decide to venture into freelance writing: you can start earning income right from the first week when you get your first client.

I did this myself when I started out until I got too busy with other online projects.

But, that might not be the case if you start blogging because you’ll need to build an audience first before the money start rolling in. And this could take up to 6 months if you go about it the right way.

Question 8: I don’t have much money and need free methods to make money online?

Online business just like any other (and YES this is a real business) requires investment of time and money.

There’s no fast and easy way to riches, let no one deceive you.

There’s no gain without pain either. It takes time, the right knowledge, a lot of hard work and financial investment.

In order words, you’ll have to spend money.

But on the plus side it’s got the lowest barrier to entry unlike other businesses which requires you to break the bank.

You can literally get started on a low budget and build up from there. If you’re not willing to invest in your business then you probably don’t have what it takes to succeed unfortunately.

Question 9: I want to start an online business like blogging my challenge and fear is choosing a topic that’ll really make great impact to blog about. Considering the thousands of more experienced bloggers out there, honestly its scary and I don’t know where to start from.

Answer: Yes the blogosphere is saturated and the competition is very fierce. But, you don’t need to worry about that because competition is good and shows there’s a viable market for your niche and people are interested in it.

Before choosing a niche or topic that will carry the focus of your blog, you need to ask yourself these questions: Does this topic spark my interest? I’m I passionate about this topic? Are there people interested in this topic?

Hot topics you can choose for your blog in Nigeria include: Admission and scholarships tips for students, Job search advice, Self Employment idea, Entertainment news, Football gist, Blogging tips and making money online.

My free ebook explains these basic steps in a brick-by-brick fashion and gives you a road map to follow, so grab you copy right now!

Yea …it’s so sad there are lots of ponzi scams saturating the internet and if you’re one that’s desperate for quick cash, you may fall for it and get burned in the end. Making money online is just like starting an offline business: it requires a lot of hardwork, determined mind and the right knowledge. Usually, when I see someone claiming he can teach me how to make millions of Naira within few days (say 7 days), I raise my read flag.

It’s nice to see my name sake reading my blog: I shared a very interesting story on my about page that’ll really crack you up: Read it here!

    1. I’m glad you agree with the post, Ayo. Thanks for stopping by

  3. Hello Emmanuel,

You have indeed answered those pressing questions judiciously. With respect to the first question, please ask the person how he or she sees blogging?

If he or she sees it as business, how much is he willing to invest?
Blogging is just like any other business, capital and time are needed.
